Adventure Seekers & The Secret Hideaway

AdventureWWII Historical FictionAges 8–12Middle Grade186 pages

Four siblings. No adults. A secret island hiding a prisoner-of-war camp. The adventure of their lives — and possibly their last.

When WWII reaches the Caribbean, the Smith siblings — Niko, Kate, Josh and Leo — face the unthinkable: their father is missing and officials plan to separate them into different foster homes. Refusing to be torn apart, the four children hatch a daring escape and sail to their family's remote island hideaway. But the island isn't empty — soldiers patrol the jungle and deep inside lies a prisoner-of-war camp. Battling storms, hunger, illness and constant danger, the siblings must rely on courage and their unbreakable bond to survive. A gripping adventure rooted in real Caribbean WWII history.

D.D. Roach — children's adventure author from Trinidad and Tobago
About the Author
D.D. Roach
Author from the Caribbean · Trinidad & Tobago

Hi, I'm D.D. Roach, a children's author from Trinidad and Tobago. I grew up surrounded by books and adventure. As a child, I loved reading The Famous Five, The Secret Seven and The Hardy Boys — Greek mythology, anything by Enid Blyton — often long after the lights were turned off. I was fascinated by adventure stories with kids at the centre: mystery, friendship, courage, and the feeling of being pulled completely into another world.

Many of my stories are inspired by my own childhood memories — camping with the Fatima Sea Scouts, family holidays around the island, spending time on the sea, and visiting the islands around Trinidad with my family. Those experiences helped shape Adventure Seekers: The Secret Hideaway — a Caribbean adventure filled with loyalty, danger, family and heart. I also wrote A Dog's View, a heartfelt story inspired by my love for dogs and the powerful bond between pets and their families. It is a semi-true story, told through her eyes.

As a writer, I enjoy creating stories that feel visual, emotional and full of life. My mission is simple: to write stories that help kids dream, imagine and get lost in a good book — just like I was as a child.

"I write kids' stories filled with adventure, heart, courage, and characters young readers can remember."

Helping Families Raise Readers

Practical advice from a Caribbean author. Building a love of reading doesn't require money — just consistency, the right book and the right moment.

The 10-Minute Rule That Works Every Time
Just 10 minutes of reading aloud together each night improves vocabulary, comprehension and confidence. It doesn't need to be long — just consistent. Start tonight. You'll usually end up reading much longer.
📵
Replace Screens, Don't Just Remove Them
Banning screens creates resistance. Instead, replace one screen hour with books — make it a routine, not a punishment. Leave books on the sofa, the coffee table, the kitchen counter. Make them the easy option.
🎁
Books as Gifts Change Everything
A book gift-wrapped and given with excitement is received completely differently from a book handed over with "you should read this." Encourage grandparents and family to give books as birthday and Christmas gifts. That association lasts a lifetime.
🏆
Let Your Child Choose Their Own Book
A child who picks their own book reads more. Ownership creates passion. Even Captain Underpants or comics count — the reading habit matters most. Once reading is a habit, choices can be guided gently.
🌴
Caribbean Books Build Confidence
Children who see characters who look like them, live where they live and sound like they do — read more and feel more confident. Actively seek Caribbean-set books. They make a genuine, measurable difference.
👴
Grandparents Are the Secret Weapon
Grandparents reading to grandchildren create the most powerful and lasting reading memories. A book given by a grandparent carries a different emotional weight — it's associated with love and safety. Make it a tradition.
📖
Keep Reading Aloud After They Can Read Alone
Many parents stop reading aloud when children can read independently — the wrong time to stop. Reading aloud to older children expands their vocabulary beyond what they can decode alone, and keeps the emotional connection alive.
📚
Build a Home Library, However Small
Children in homes with books read more. Start with 10 to 20 books your child can call their own. Visit second-hand bookshops and charity sales. A personal collection creates an identity: "I am someone who reads."
